Special Care for Special Needs

Mari's List Medidenta - Events - Special Care for Special Needs

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects approximately one in 44 children in the United States, with around 100 new diagnoses each day. Since its recognition in the 1940s, ASD has become the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the country. Treating patients on the Autism Spectrum in a dental setting presents unique challenges, including behavioral and cooperation concerns, related health issues, and the oral implications of medications. As individuals transition into adulthood, many outgrow pediatric dental care and begin receiving treatment in general practices. This transition underscores the need for dental professionals to be equipped with effective strategies for managing anxiety and addressing the specific oral health needs of patients with ASD and other special needs. The speaker, drawing from personal experience as both a practicing hygienist and a parent of a child with ASD, will share insights and methods for enhancing the dental experience for these patients.

Course Objectives:

  • Review the symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder and commonly associated conditions.
  • Examine the common medications used to treat ASD symptoms and their oral health implications.
  • Introduce alternative methods for treating patients with special needs in the dental office.
  • Discuss recommendations that can be instrumental in improving homecare for individuals with special needs

This course is intended for dentists, specialists, dental students, hygienists and dental assistants.

Completion/Verification Code will be issued at the completion of the webinar.
